Stretched and Shredded by *AForAdultery
This is an interesting shot. If you look at it long enough, it can play some visual tricks on you. I find it to be a fairly unique capture.

This piece reminds me of the old King Crimson song: Indiscipline. "The more I look at it the more I like it."
Everything about the wood grain's flow in and out of the field is hypnotic. The lighting helps to accentuate and extend a field that I can intellectually judge to be three feet at it's deepest. This is increased by the arching layers of wood grain and the deep shadows of the negative space.
I like that you didn't center it on the smallest strands coming out of the top left corner. Though the composition is stronger for that double strand of roots. They give a fresher texture and a good contrast to the weathered feel of the rest of the wood. It also increases the flow of the eye into a frequently disused field of pictures. The intersection with the grain to the primary Upward arch redirects your eys once again to the rest of the composition.
A subtraction of that third of the shot would have detracted from this. Focusing too much on it ( cropping the right half say) would have made the piece more vertical but much less compelling.
This is a piece to be very proud of.
It manages to be both calming and dynamic.
